About Reflexology and Vertical Reflexology Therapy (VRT)

Reflexology works on the principle that reflex points on the soles, tops and sides of the feet are connected to corresponding areas of the body. Specialised massage techniques are used along these reflex points to correct imbalances and help release blocked energy throughout the body. The Chinese used pressure therapy more than 5000 years ago and Egyptian artwork found in tombs seem to depict foot massage around 2000BC so the health benefits have been recognised for a very long time. This early foot massage worked on the principle of energy zones and is what we base reflexology on today. In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham expanded these ideas when she found that these energy zones (reflexes) on the feet were an exact mirror image of the organs of the body and her mapping of these zones is what we use today. Lynne Booth, a renowned Reflexologist discovered Vertical Reflex Therapy, which is a profound form of Reflexology where the top of the feet are briefly worked in a weight-bearing position.

Who can enjoy Reflexology & VRT

Reflexology and VRT is suitable for most adults but there are certain conditions where reflexology should be avoided so before treatment begins a thorough consultation takes place. All consultations are confidential.

What happens during a Reflexology & VRT

As it is just the feet that are being worked on you remain fully clothed; rolling up trousers to the knees, removing socks and shoes only.
If you are receiving VRT then you will be asked to stand, supported by a chair, after having received a soothing foot spa first. Treatment normally lasts 20 minutes.

If you are receiving a Reflexology treatment the feet are placed in the foot spa which incorporates a soothing blend of mineral salts and essential oils. You are then invited to recline on the couch where treatment will begin. After treatment a balm will be massaged into the feet.

After your treatment

Your body responds in many ways – deep relaxation is encouraged enabling stress levels to fall, energy levels are increased through the meridians, endorphins are released, immune system is boosted while toxins are removed, circulation improved - you should rest afterwards to aid the body’s natural healing process. Avoid eating a heavy meal within 2 hour of treatment. Alcohol, caffeine based products and tobacco should be avoided for 24 hours and instead drink plenty of still water as this helps to flush away toxins.
