About Holistic Massage

Massage promotes relaxation and contentment, can ease aches and pains and triggers the release of the body’s natural painkillers. Because touch is such a primary human need, massage has been rooted in human culture for centuries. There is evidence that the Chinese were practicing massage as long ago as 3000BC as were Hindus who’s sacred text included guidelines for hygiene and wellbeing. Mary Queen of Scots recognised the benefits of massage and promoted it throughout her life but it was Per Henrik Ling who after extensive research developed a scientific system known as Swedish Massage. Today, many of his massage techniques have been adopted into everyday treatments and each type of massage has its own specific method. Holistic massage looks at the whole body and being.

Who can enjoy Massage?

Massage is suitable for most people from babies to the elderly (babies should only be seen by a qualified practitioner) but there are certain conditions where massage should be avoided so before treatment begins a thorough consultation takes place. All consultations are confidential.

What happens during a Massage?

Each treatment is adapted for your individual need. A full body massage last for an hour but specific target areas, for example the back, neck and shoulders, takes 30 minutes. A base oil is used to enable hands and fingers to flow over the area and in some cases an essential oil maybe used (modesty is a paramount priority at all times).

After your treatment

You should rest afterwards to aid the body’s natural healing process. Avoid eating a heavy meal within 2 hours of treatment. Alcohol, caffeine based products and tobacco should be avoided for 24 hours and instead drink plenty of still water as this helps to flush away toxins.

Your body responds to massage in two ways. Firstly, there is the physical effect – reducing muscle stiffness and increasing joint mobility and secondly there are psychological benefits – enhanced feeling of relaxation and contentment. Overall massage helps you to unwind and relax which is a great antidote to today’s stressful lifestyle.
