About Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy aims to restore the harmony of the mind, body and spirit. It works by using the pure properties of plants and is most effective when used in conjunction with massage. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were the first to appreciate the benefits of essential oils and it wasn’t until the 13th century that essential oils reached England. Monks in monasteries kept herbal medicinal wisdom to treat the sick and as bathing was seen as sinful great stock was placed on aromatics for their antibacterial and anti-pesticide properties. Culpeper first listed the medicinal properties of plants but scientific study didn’t start until 1920 by a French chemist Gattefosse who discovered that oils can be absorbed by the skin and can reach the organs through the circulatory system. Aromatherapists regularly use around 50 oils each one having different therapeutic properties to help a variety of conditions.

Who can enjoy Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy Massage is suitable for most adults but there are certain conditions where you should avoid it. To ensure your continued well being all treatments begin with a consultation and in some cases your doctor’s permission maybe required. All consultations are confidential.

What happens during an Aromatherapy treatment

Aromatherapy oils are blended with a base oil before being applied to the skin and each treatment meets your individual needs. A full body aromatherapy massage lasts for an hour but specific areas may be targeted. There are two main ways that you can benefit from essential oils. Firstly they can be absorbed by the skin causing chemical changes in the body and secondly through breathing when you inhale the fragrance. It’s worth remembering that the sense of smell has direct access to the brain enabling immediate effect on the body, so breathe deeply and enjoy the Aromas.

After your treatment

You should rest afterwards to aid the body’s natural healing process. Maximum benefits from essential oils can only be obtained if they are left to be absorbed by the skin therefore bathing should be avoided within 8 hours and no creams, oils or salts placed on the skin for 24 hours. Avoid eating a heavy meal within 2 hours of treatment. Drink plenty of still water to flush out toxins and avoid alcohol, caffeine based products and tobacco for 24 hours.
